From 1st July to 11th July, 1917, the 21st Middlesex battalion of 121 Brigade, 40th Division were holding the front line in the Gauche Wood sector of the front line near Villers-Guislain, south of Cambrai. During the last few days of this tour they were subjected to some heavy shelling from the German artillery which resulted in a number of casualties. One of these was Frederick Shirvill who was killed on 9th July. |
